Emerging Summer Trends in Home Décor

Now that we’ve officially entered the summer season, it’s time for a home décor refresh! Out with the cold and in with blue skies, vibrant flowers, foliage and warm weather. Your summer home décor should follow suit, as color, warmth and nature are major themes in 2018 summer home décor.

We reached out to interior designers to get their take on how you can transition your winter and spring neutrals into trending summer colors and patterns. What follows are their insights.

Vibrant Colors

Neutrals had their day in the sun! Now it’s time for your whites, blacks and grays to transition into vibrant violets, peony pinks and indigo blues. We can’t say we didn’t see this color trend coming; Pantone’s Color the Year changed from a subtle greenery in 2017 to ultra violet in 2018.

According to Abra Landau, design expert at Fashion Furniture, summer is the perfect time to add colors to your home.

“Change neutral wall art out for colorful, graphic paintings, or replace existing table centerpieces with vibrant, fresh flowers,” said Landau. “Shop flea markets or antique stores for colorful pieces of tableware or rent a new set of dishes for summer in a bright, exciting color – no need to commit beyond a few months.”

Warm Metallics

As colors move from cold neutrals to warmer pigments, metal finishes are also experiencing a warmer transition. For example, while nickel and chrome reigned supreme in winter, summer is making way for brass, gold and rose gold, according to Lisa Melone Cloughen, founder of Melone Cloughen Interiors.

“I am seeing more ornate mirrors in beautiful gold and silver leaf finishes and they look fabulous in sleek interiors as well as more traditional settings. They bring the bling in a sophisticated way,” explained Cloughen.

One prominent trend in 2018 is statements. The days of minimalism is long gone, making way for statement doors, walls, art and even ceilings. The most popular way to make a statement this summer is with wallpaper.

That’s right, we’re seeing a resurgence of the popularity of wallpaper, which is finding its way onto ceiling and accents walls in the home. It’s relatively cheap, and you can purchase removable wallpaper for a less permanent commitment.

Watercolor wallpaper is especially popular this season, fulfilling both summer 2018 trends of bright, vibrant colors and the ombré effect, which is also seeing a resurgence in home décor.

“As a way of adding interest to the room without overpowering it with too much pattern, a few of our clients have added accent walls using wallpaper,” revealed Paige NeJame, owner of CertaPro Painters. “This keeps the room relatively neutral, except for the pop of pattern and color from the wallpaper.”
